Current Research
Dr. Tzu-Chieh Kurt Hong’s
dissertation, Shape Machine: shape embedding and rewriting in visual design, is
a research work on the implementation of a shape grammar interpreter, Shape
Machine, which allows designers to visually process shape recognition and shape
replacement in computer-aided design system. This dissertation received ARCC (Architectural Research Centers Consotium) Dissertation Award 2022, because of the contributions of shape recognition to CAD systems. In this dissertation, five solutions are proposed respectively to five critical problems that have been identified
in this discourse for decades, including: 1) a new framework integrating shape
computing system and CAD system to avoid fragmented workflow, 2) a maximal line
calibration system to mitigate the precision errors in modeling, 3) a pictorial
algorithm to reduce the accumulated errors in transformation derivation, 4) a
multi-step procedure to resolve the indeterminate shape embedding, and 5) a new
data structure, register point signature, to significantly lower the
algorithmic complexity in shape embedding. Shape Machine has been used in three
design studios and five elective courses in the School of Architecture and the
School of Interactive Computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology since
2019, furthermore, it is also adopted in two workshops in the School of
Architecture at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology in
Taiwan.

Ultra-Thin Concrete XBuck Fuller

Sponsored by:
BuildExThis project was developed in ARCH 509 DesignBuild (Fall 2025) as an intensive exploration of ultra-thin concrete construction, grounded in a close study of Buckminster Fuller’s Fly’s Eye Dome. Over an eight-week period, a team of four students investigated Fuller’s geometric logic, structural efficiency, and modular thinking, translating these principles into a contemporary design and fabrication system. The central constraint of the project was strict and uncompromising: all concrete components were required to be thinner than 1/8 inch.

Through a process of iterative design, material testing, and custom formwork development, the students designed and fabricated a series of super-thin concrete elements that pushed the limits of conventional construction practices. Careful attention was given to geometry, reinforcement strategies, and casting techniques to ensure structural performance at such minimal thicknesses.

The project culminated in a full-scale mockup, which served as a critical proof of concept. The assembled structure demonstrated that the system was not only buildable but structurally sound, even with extremely thin concrete components. This work underscores the potential of geometry-driven design and hands-on experimentation to expand material possibilities, revealing how structural intelligence can emerge from constraints rather than be limited by them.

BuildExThis project was developed in ARCH 509 DesignBuild (Fall 2025) as an intensive exploration of ultra-thin concrete construction, grounded in a detailed study of Erwin Hauer’s Nexus Labyrinth. Over the course of eight weeks, a team of four students examined Hauer’s use of continuous surfaces, modular repetition, and spatial depth, translating these ideas into a contemporary construction system. The central constraint was demanding: all concrete components were designed to reach an extreme thinness, with elements approaching 1/16 inch.

Through iterative prototyping and material testing, the students developed a series of super-thin concrete units that relied on geometric precision rather than mass for stability. A key innovation of the project was the assembly strategy. Instead of using conventional structural connections, the components were simply stacked on one another. To enable accurate placement, the students designed a lightweight metal alignment frame that functioned solely as a positioning guide, not as a structural support.

The project culminated in a full-scale mockup that served as a critical proof of concept. Despite the exceptionally thin concrete elements and minimal connection strategy, the assembled structure demonstrated clear stability and coherence. The project highlights how careful geometric design, precise fabrication, and thoughtful assembly logic can expand the structural possibilities of ultra-thin concrete systems.

BuildExThis project was developed in ARCH 509 DesignBuild (Fall 2025) as an intensive investigation into ultra-thin concrete construction, informed by a study of Frei Otto’s Compass Method. The Compass Method is an algorithmic approach that translates free-form surfaces into mesh systems with equal edge lengths, offering an efficient balance between geometric rigor and structural logic. Over an eight-week period, a team of four students adopted this method as both a design framework and a construction guide.

Working under a strict material constraint, the students designed and fabricated super-thin concrete components with thicknesses approaching 1/8 inch. Through iterative prototyping, they explored how mesh geometry, repetition, and folding could enhance stiffness and stability at such minimal thicknesses. The concrete elements were cast as narrow strips with embedded metal mesh reinforcement, then folded into a zigzag configuration. These folded strips were assembled by simply stacking them together, allowing geometry and friction to play a primary role in the system’s performance.

The project culminated in a full-scale mockup that tested the feasibility of the approach. While the final installation required supplemental structural support, the mockup demonstrated that the system could function effectively even with extremely thin concrete components. The project highlights how algorithmic geometry and experimental making can push the limits of material performance.

BuildEConcrete Lines in the Air is a student-led design-build project from the ARCH509 studio at the University of Kansas that challenges conventional notions of material strength and structure. In this project, students explored the idea of making concrete light—not just in weight, but in expression. Departing from the typical use of concrete as a heavy, compressive material, they developed a system of slender concrete tubes reinforced with PVC pipes, resulting in components that are both lightweight and flexible.

The use of PVC as reinforcement inverts the typical material relationship between concrete and plastic. Here, concrete—the traditionally strong and rigid material—takes on a more fragile role, while plastic—the typically weak and flexible material—gives the system its structural integrity. The outcome is a composite element that is neither fully strong nor weak, but instead elastic. This elasticity allows the components to bend and shift slightly under load, offering a degree of resilience not usually associated with concrete construction.

Assembled together, these components form a coherent, self-supporting structure. While each piece may seem delicate on its own, the collective system gains strength through repetition, alignment, and geometric logic. The resulting installation appears as if lines of concrete are drawn in the air—floating, weaving, and curving to create spatial rhythm. This fusion of material experimentation and formal lightness reflects a radical rethinking of both how we use concrete and how we define structural performance. The project ultimately reveals a new vocabulary for building with concrete: one that values flexibility, precision, and imagination.

Concrete Grammar is a design-build project developed by students in the ARCH509 studio at the University of Kansas. The project explores how rule-based thinking can shape the design and fabrication of ultra-thin concrete components. Taking inspiration from linguistic grammar—where a set of rules governs the arrangement of words—students devised a formal system in which simple parts combine to generate complex spatial outcomes.

At the core of the project is a custom-designed concrete panel system, with each panel cast to include two tabs that can be oriented either vertically or horizontally. When a tab is aligned vertically with the panel, the two elements form an “L” shape. This configuration significantly enhances the component’s structural capacity, making it capable of resisting bending and compression—ideal for load-bearing elements. When oriented horizontally, the tab offers minimal structural support but serves a critical function in alignment and connection, enabling precise assembly without excess material.

This rule-based system of tab orientation governs both the logic and flexibility of the design. It allows for a wide range of formal variation while maintaining structural integrity and material efficiency. Using this system, students explored combinations of geometry, rhythm, and surface articulation. The ultra-thin concrete sections—made possible through meticulous formwork and casting techniques—underscore the project’s focus on precision and minimalism.

Concrete Grammar ultimately reveals how a clear generative framework, grounded in material intelligence, can lead to a rich architectural language. It demonstrates a compelling synthesis of logic and creativity, structure and expression, lightness and strength.

"Empty Chrysalis" is an art project for celebrating women artists and their braveness against the bias, unfair and discriminated environment curated by the Spencer Museum of Art in Lawrence Kansas. This project celebrates advancements toward gender equity and honors the achievements of women artists who have courageously forged a path despite facing inequities. Visitors are invited to enter the installations and experience the light filtering through the chrysalis during the day, immersing themselves in the essence of transformation. At night, internal lighting makes the installations glow, enhancing their visual impact and illuminating the surrounding area.

By revisiting these empty chrysalises, the installation encourages audiences to reflect on the transformation and growth of women, exploring their journey from confinement to liberation. The use of recycled materials underscores the themes of recycling and transformation, reinforcing the idea of breaking free from societal constraints. The project prompts viewers to consider the journey toward a more equitable future.

This art project is led by Dr. Tzu-Chieh Kurt Hong, assistant professor of architecture at the University of Kansas, within the context of the ARCH509 Design Build Lab and ARCH510 Architectural Detailing courses. Fourteen junior students will design the installations over four weeks and construct them over six weeks after finalizing their designs. All materials are sponsored by the Hamm Recycling Company and the School of Architecture and Design, a local industry specializing in recycling services.

Hamm Recycling Companies"Empty Chrysalis" is an art project for celebrating women artists and their braveness against the bias, unfair and discriminated environment curated by the Spencer Museum of Art in Lawrence Kansas.
